Sanity is a family drama in the same way that Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf is a family drama. Edgy and bold. It’s unique style and structure differ from the standard Hollywood fare and is akin to Tony Richardson’s Look Back in Anger, Richard Linklater’s SubUrbia and Noam Murro’s Smart People.
Log Line A young woman has a nervous breakdown. Grasping for straws and with nowhere to go, she returns to her estranged family for the first time in years. In the end, she doesn’t get what she wants from her family but finds a hint of sanity in an unexpected place.
The Story Twenty six year old Valorie Colton, a locally famous punk rock singer, has a nervous breakdown when her band mates abandon her on the verge of wider fame and success, After a short stint in a psychiatric hospital, she’s thrown out of her apartment by her roommate. Without a place to live, no job, no cash, and grasping for straws, she returns without notice to her estranged parents, still living in her childhood home. Her arrival is unwelcomed by her traditional mom, alcoholic dad, and bowling champ older brother who still lives with them. Not only does she ask for a place to sleep but she insists that she can teach her slightly disturbed family a more loving and peaceful way to live. She fends off attacks from her family related to her past rebellious behavior and recent bad decisions. An undercurrent of things not said bends and shapes the argument, pushing the situation to a breaking point. In the midst of all this,
two potential beaus for Valorie show up. The first is a nightmare
for Valorie. Her parents leave her alone with him because they believe
he’s a great guy, but he’s not. He’s a pig to say
the least and attacks Valorie. She defends herself and dispatches
him with new found strength. With the other courtier, she finds what
she really craves, somebody who accepts her for who she is, no apologies
necessary. In the end, Valorie finds an unexpected way out of the chaos of her life, a way to stability, a way to sanity. |
